Archaeologists in Macedonia said Thursday they have discovered a well-preserved statue of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Archaeologist Marina Oncevska hailed the work as a "masterpiece," praising "the smoothness of the marble and the beauty of the statue." The goddess is
nude but modestly covers her breast and groin with her hands. Oncevska said the statue dates to the second or third century. Because of her pose, archaeologists have dubbed the statue 'The Shy Goddess Venus.' The statue, executed in the late classical Greek tradition, was found at the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Scupi, located on the outskirts of Skopje, capital of the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia.
